Digger's Choice #3

Ratios

Read p84 from the Math Textbook.  Then, using the knowledge that you gained, play the Display the Digits game.  You may only use the digits 1-9 ONCE.  This may mean you will have to find an equivalent ratio!

Weight a Minute!
In Chapter 4, Mr. Sir said that he eats a burlap sack of sunflowers each week.  Let's find out how many seeds that really is!
(Math lesson on converting weight measurements)

Day Two: Read Chapters 6-7

Digger's Choice #1

Pasts

We have now learned about the crime Stanley committed in order to get him sent to Camp Green Lake .  However, Stanley does not know the stories about any of the other campers.

Create a descriptive story explaining how one of the campers got to Camp Green Lake .  Tell about the crime that they committed and any other important details that got them stuck digging a large hole each day.

Digger's Choice #3

Blog Response
On Radway's Round Table

During a counseling session, Mr. Pendanski told the boys, “Nothing in life is easy.  But that’s no reason to give up.  You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish if you set your mind to it.  After all, you only have one life so you should try to make the most of it.”  How could you take Mr. Pendanski’s advice and apply it to your life?

Warden's Demand: Voice Writing Activity
X-Ray, the tube, The Warden, Stanley, the water truck, the shovel, the dirt
Retell "The Discovery of THE TUBE"  from the point of view of one of the choices above.  Use many specific details so your classmates will be able to guess who you are!  Don’t share with your neighbor!  They will have to guess!

Digger's Choice #1

Is That Really Gold?

The campers thought the tube might be made of pure gold.  Learn a little bit about the elements of the Periodic Table.

Periodic Table #1
Periodic Table #2

What is the symbol for Gold on a Periodic Table?  What is its atomic number?  What else can you find out about gold?

Record your findings for gold and other elements on the Google doc!  Watch out!  Some elements’ symbols can be quite tricky!  Just because it starts with a letter g doesn’t mean that its symbol will have the letter g in it!

Digger's Choice #2

So Colorful

The Warden’s fingernails were painted dark red.  Make a list of the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple).

Then, under each of these “normal” colors, find synonyms for them.  For example, red can also be called crimson, scarlet, or ruby.

Use http://thesaurus.com to help you with your search for colorful synonyms!

If you wish, use your crayons or colored pencils to create a rainbow.  Using a black marker, write each of the synonyms over the different colored rays of your rainbow to make a truly colorful rainbow!

Digger's Choice #3

Vocabulary

Reread chapters 13-15.  Write down the words that you don’t know the meaning of.  Use the dictionary application on your iPod to look up the words.  Write down the definitions.

Read Chapters 16-20
Warden's Demand: A Map of the Holes
Create a map of the holes on the "lake" where Stanley really found the gold tube.  It can be created to look like a hidden treasure map.  Remember to include coordinates and map key!

Find out what snakes are in South Dakota.  Does South Dakota have any venomous snakes? If so, how many?

Digger's Choice #2

Blog Response

After the incident of the stolen sunflower seeds, Mr. Sir was struck by the Warden.  Mr. Sir was in a lot pain and Stanley thought he was going to die.  But the Warden was quick to say “He’s not going to die, unfortunately for you.”

What do you think the Warden meant when she said this?  Explain your thoughts using context clues from your reading.

Digger's Choice #3

Inventor's Assistant

Help Stanley’s dad with his invention.  He’s trying to invent a way to recycle old sneakers. Before you can help him, you’ll need to learn about the recycling process.

Using this website  learn about the recycling process.

When finished, brainstorm ways you could recycle old sneakers.  Then brainstorm products that we recycle everyday!

Read Chapters 21-25
Warden's Demand: The Past
We don't know much about the past of the bosy who are at Camp Green Lake.  The reader is not told what each of them did to get them sentenced to Camp Green Lake.

Make up a past for each of the boys.  For each nickname below, write how you think they got the nickname and what they did to get sentenced to Camp Green Lake.

Idioms

In Chapter 18, Stanley says that his "heart has hardened" when he realized he didn't have empathy for Zero.

Illustrate the literal meaning of a few of the idioms you have heard in Holes.  Use an idiom dictionary if you are unsure of the meaning of the idiom.

Use the actual quote from the Holes book (include Chapter and page number) as a caption for your illustration.

Digger's Choice #3

First Aid

In Chapter 18 Stanley gets sliced by a shovel, causing him to bleed.  Mr. Pendanski doesn't have a First Aid Kit, so he makes a bandage out of the sunflower burlap sack.

What items should be found in a First Aid kit here in our classroom?  Why?

Write a “Putting Together a Classroom First Aid Kit” brochure. Include the things that should be in a first aid kit.  Also, include a few (3) scenarios and how to administer proper first aid.  (example: A kid gets a scrape on the blacktop.  What should you do?)

***Important—be sure to include something about “universal precautions”.***

Chapters 29 - 30
Warden's Demand: Conflict Resolution
In Chapter 30, Mr. Pendanski suggested to Stanley that he should, "Hit him back.  You're bigger."  At Lowell MST that action would get you a one way ticket to Mr. Fink's office and in big trouble.

In your tent teams, role play a skit showing how to BEST handle the bully situation that Stanley finds himself in.

Use this rubric to help you prepare your skit.

Digger's Choice #1

Thunderstorms

Off in the distance, there was a thunderstorm where the campers digging holes could hear the thunder and see the lightning.

How do thunderstorms form?  Why are we not constantly in a thunderstorm?

Digger's Choice #2

Noah's Arc

The campers started joking that the thunderstorm was quickly approaching and would need to start gathering 2 of each animal, just like Noah did according to the Christian story.

Other cultures also have a story similar to Noah's Arc.  Research to find a few other examples of Noah's Arc stories from different cultures.

Digger's Choice #3

Party!

Play a birthday party for one of the campers using only the materials that they have at Camp Green Lake.

Be creative!
